Understanding Head and Neck Cancer

These types of cancers typically occur in the nose, mouth, throat or larynx

Head and neck cancer refers collectively to cancers that arise in the head and neck region. These cancers typically begin in the squamous cells that line the moist surfaces inside the mouth, nose, and throat.

This group of cancers are strongly associated with tobacco use, alcohol use, and the human papillomavirus (HPV virus). The good news is that the number of Americans who smoke is on the decline. Unfortunately, smokeless tobacco use is on the rise, and may also pose a threat of increased risk of head and neck cancers. The HPV virus is increasingly more associated with head and neck cancers, and this occurs at a younger age. New vaccines may be effective in preventing head and neck cancers from developing.

Head and neck cancers are treatable if caught early. Although eliminating the cancer is the primary goal of curative treatment, preserving the function of nearby nerves, organs, and tissues is also very important. When planning treatment, doctors consider how treatment may affect a person’s quality of life, such as how a person talks, eats, and breathes.

Outpatient Care, On-the-Go Recovery

The power of advanced radiation therapy for treating cancer in the head & neck

Targeted Treatment
Radiation therapy delivers high doses of radiation directly to the cancerous cells in the head and neck. This targeted approach is especially beneficial as it can preserve important functions like speaking, eating, and breathing
Effective in Killing Cancer Cells
Radiation therapy has been shown to be very effective in killing cancer cells and shrinking tumors making it an important part of many head and neck cancer treatment plans. It works by damaging the DNA in cancer cells, preventing them from dividing and growing
Minimizes Side Effects
Compared to surgical treatment in the head and neck, radiation therapy often causes less functional loss of eating, speaking, and swallowing. Additionally, it can be given in an outpatient setting, making it more convenient for many people and avoids the need for long hospital stays
